The selection of the appropriate valve type depends on specific installation requirements such as pressure, temperature, and the characteristics of the transported medium. Thanks to the variety of available models, these products offer flexibility, enabling optimal adaptation to both simple systems and the most demanding industrial applications.

Types of Butterfly Valve Actuators: Manual, Electric, Pneumatic, and More

Butterfly valves can operate both in control systems—precisely regulating media flow—and in on/off mode, effectively opening or closing the flow. Due to their versatility, butterfly valves can be fitted with a wide range of actuators, including manual, electric, pneumatic, and other types. The choice of actuator and operating mode depends on the specific application and design concept, allowing optimal adaptation to system requirements. Thanks to the wide range of available options, Value Valves butterfly valves ensure reliability and efficiency under all operating conditions. Below is a detailed overview of the available solutions.

1. Manual Actuators

Butterfly valves equipped with manual actuators can be used both for flow regulation (with limited precision) and primarily in on/off systems, where they serve as a fast and reliable means of opening or closing the flow. Manual actuators, such as hand levers or manual gearboxes, allow convenient and efficient control of valve opening without the need for an external power supply. These actuators are ideal for installations with limited automation requirements or where access to electric or pneumatic power is restricted. Due to their simple design, manual actuators are reliable and easy to maintain, making them an economical and durable solution.

Manual actuators used by Value Valves include:

  • Hand lever – used for valves up to DN150
  • Mechanical gearbox – used without limitation, recommended for valves DN200 and above

1.1 Hand Levers

Butterfly valves with hand levers are used where simple, manual flow control is required without the need for automation. This type of actuator is ideal for systems where valve position changes are infrequent and precise regulation is not required. Hand-lever-operated valves are commonly used where there is no access to electric, pneumatic, or hydraulic power, or where more complex actuators would be uneconomical.

They are recommended for applications with low automation requirements, such as small water supply and wastewater systems, irrigation systems, and installations where valve operation is rare or irregular. Hand levers are most commonly used for on/off butterfly valves. Thanks to their simple design, hand levers are reliable, easy to operate, and require minimal maintenance.

An option is available to equip hand levers with limit switches.

1.2 Mechanical Gearboxes

Mechanical gearboxes are an exceptionally versatile solution suitable for use across the full range of nominal diameters and pressures, making them widely applicable in many industrial sectors. Their design ensures smooth, stepless control, allowing use both for shut-off and flow regulation applications. This flexibility makes mechanical gearboxes suitable for a wide range of installations, from simple systems to complex industrial processes.

As standard, mechanical gearboxes are equipped with mechanical position indicators, allowing quick and easy identification of the current valve position. Upon request, they can also be fitted with position locks to prevent accidental movement, enhancing system safety and stability.

Additionally, mechanical gearboxes can be equipped with limit switch boxes, enabling remote monitoring and automatic shutdown when extreme valve positions are reached. These features increase operating comfort and safety, particularly in complex industrial installations where reliable control of flow shut-off and regulation is critical.

2. Electric Actuators

Electric actuators are a modern solution widely used for butterfly valves in shut-off and flow control applications across various industries. They are characterized by high reliability and precise operation, making them ideal for systems requiring accurate flow control. Electric actuators are available in a wide range of designs, allowing adaptation to diverse operating conditions.

Electric actuators convert electrical energy into rotational motion that drives the valve mechanism, enabling smooth and precise opening and closing. Depending on application requirements, they can be configured for different rotation ranges, providing optimal flow regulation.

One of the key advantages of electric actuators is their capability for remote control, significantly increasing operational comfort and safety, especially in large and complex industrial installations.
