What Is a Gate Valve?

A gate valve is a shut-off valve designed to fully open or completely close the flow of a medium in a pipeline. Unlike control valves, gate valves are not intended for throttling flow – their design allows for a fully open flow passage, minimizing pressure loss within the system.

The operating mechanism is based on the vertical movement of a wedge, plate, or knife, which rises during opening and lowers to tightly shut off the flow when closing the valve.

Slab Gate Valves – A Reliable Solution in Industrial Valve Technology

Slab gate valves are technologically advanced shut-off valves which, thanks to their design, provide a full bore, minimal pressure drop, and excellent tightness in both flow directions. Their defining feature is the full-bore, through-conduit design, which allows unobstructed flow of the medium and enables the use of pipeline pigs—cleaning or inspection devices introduced into the pipeline.

These valves are designed for operation under severe industrial conditions, including oil and gas transmission systems, water pipelines, and chemical processing installations.

Design and Operating Principle of a Slab Gate Valve

A slab gate valve consists of a single slab gate moving between two floating sealing seats. In the open position, the gate is fully lifted out of the flow path, creating a straight, unobstructed flow channel. This eliminates turbulence and ensures a very low pressure drop.
 In the closed position, the gate lowers between the seats, providing tight shut-off in both flow directions.

Full-Bore, Through-Conduit Design

The bore diameter matches the pipeline diameter, ensuring minimal pressure loss and allowing safe pigging operations without the risk of damaging valve components. This design increases system efficiency and reduces energy losses.

Tight, Bi-Directional Sealing

The use of a floating slab gate and two floating seats provides bubble-tight sealing in both flow directions. The downstream seat is pressure-energized by the medium, while the upstream seat is spring-loaded. This ensures full tightness regardless of flow direction or pressure fluctuations.

Low Pressure Drop

The smooth, straight flow channel eliminates turbulence, resulting in reduced energy consumption and lower hydraulic losses. This is a key advantage, particularly in long-distance pipeline systems.
